Meeting of ‘Phaltan Forest Conservation Project’ : July 02, 2022
A meeting of ‘Phaltan Forest Conservation Project’ was organized at ICAR-NIASM, Baramati on 02/07/2022. This project is initiated by iiCARE, Baramati to develop partially degraded and undulating terrain of Sahyadri rages situated at Jawali village (Taluka- Phaltan). First field visit of NIASM experimental farm was arranged for Hon Shrimant Sanjivraje Naik Nimbalkar (Ex-president, Jilha Parishad, Satara and Trustee of Naik Nimbalkar Developmental Trust) along with Dr Santosh Bhosle, Director and team members of iiCARE and Sh Vivek Bhoite, KVK Baramati. They visited medicinal garden block, dragon fruit experiment plot, waste water treatment unit, CIFS, Livestock unit, field phenomics and fruit orchards. During the meeting, detailed presentation given by iiCARE team (Dr Sanjani and Dr Pallav) which included genesis of project, initial site surveys and vegetation reports, slope maps, tentative locations for soil and water conservation measures and tree planning (forest trees, agroforest trees and fruit trees etc.). The presentation also included initial soil fertility status, water bodies’ availability, etc. Dr. Santosh Bhosale (Director, iiCARE) has briefed about the project, which included project activities, sustainability of project, incentives to local communities and how their livelihood security will be improved, vision towards carbon credits and project partners emphasizing more on how ICAR-NIASM will be crucial in implementing the ideas, developing soil and water conservation measures and tree plantation activities scientifically. Dr. H Pathak (Director, ICAR-NIASM) suggested to focuse more on collect the data pertaining to change in soil fertility status, carbon, water, energy footprints, etc. which will play major role while dealing with carbon credit with coming years. He also appreciated the work done by the project team. While discussion in the meeting few suggestions like data collection and management, controlled grazing, incentives to local communities, suggestions for plantation on new trees and grasses etc. came out. Shrimant Sanjivraje Naik Nimbalkar chaired the meeting. He appreciated the work presented by team iiCARE. He said within a very short period of time team iiCARE has done lot of fruitful activities and pointed out work done by individual member of the team and hoping very good outputs will be coming out from the project. He also praised work done by the ICAR-NIASM in turning basaltic degraded lands in to productive lands during the field visit. The team members of iiCARE, HoS of NIASM, Dr Vivek Bhoite with team of KVK, Baramati participated in the meeting. Dr Vijaysinha Kakade, Scientist, ICAR-NIASM has coordinated this meeting.
